10,000+ Go problems, sorted by theme

Go AI's problem collection covers ten themes, from counting liberties to life and death. Layered hints and explanations show why a move works, not only where to play.

What is tsumego?

Tsumego are Go problems: you get a position on the board and look for the right way to play it. Solving them trains you to read ahead. You may also see them called life-and-death problems.

The ten themes

  • Liberties: counting the empty points next to a group.
  • Atari and capture: stones with one liberty left, and how to take them.
  • Connect and cut: joining your groups and separating your opponent's.
  • Shape: placing stones so they work efficiently.
  • Snapback: letting your opponent capture, then recapturing more stones.
  • Shortage of liberties: when too few liberties stop a group from connecting or defending itself.
  • Ladders and nets: chasing stones to the edge, or loosely enclosing them so they cannot run.
  • Squeeze: sacrificing stones to force your opponent's into a clump.
  • Semeai: a capturing race between two groups.
  • Life and death: making two eyes to live, or stopping your opponent from doing so.
